My name is Todd Martin MD. I am Family Medicine physician in San Diego, CA. Inside and outside of work, one of my passions is body movement. My focus is on how to improve people's lives by helping them to move better. Moving better can mean functioning more easily in your daily life, it may mean getting more enjoyment from leisure activities like sports or dancing, and most importantly, it may mean reducing or eliminating pain and dysfunction.
I am joined in the MovementSphere by my wife and dance partner Marizabel (Belle) Martin, who I met in 1997 when we were teaching Argentine Tango at the same Tango school in San Diego. We teamed up as professional dance partners in 1999 and began performing with our dance company Tango Alma as well as teaching at Argentine Tango festivals around the country. In addition to Argentine Tango, Marizabel also has a background as a perfromer in a variety of other dances, including hip hop, flamenco, salsa, and belly dance.
What started for us as a passion for dance and movement as a creative outlet has blossomed into a passion for movement as a means to improve physical, mental, and spiritual health and wellbeing, both for ourselves and for our community. Belle runs Bubblin' Belle Dance Fitness, providing a variety of fitness oriented classes including dance fitness, core training, Tabata, and Hoola Hoop. She also runs the Flavor Company, a cultural dance fusion group that gives people of all ages and fitness levels a outlet to learn movement and increase their fitness as well as giving them a chance to perform for audiences around San Diego. Through this group, we have really learned how movement can play a pivotal role in happiness, and we aim to bring functional movement to as many people as possible.
As a physician, in addition to promoting regular exercise and proper diet, I have an intense passion for body mechanics and for helping people prevent many of the painful medical conditions that develop when the body is not moved properly. In addition to Argentine Tango, I am an advanced Tai Chi practitioner. By combining the study of dance and Tai Chi, over the past 7 years I developed a body movement system called the Quantum Movement System. It translates many of the elusive theories of Tai Chi into a universal movement system that can be applied directly to any activity, from dance and martial arts to basic activites like walking, running, sitting, standing, climbing stairs, and other important functions of daily life.
We hope you join us in the MovementSphere. You can watch videos of our recent tango and cultural dance performances. You can share in our love of movement, health, and gratitude. In the MovemenSphere you can also get access to online courses such as the Walking Code and the Tai Chi Code to help you improve the quality of your own movement. Movement is function, movement is freedom, movement is life...so move well.
