How to Walk with a Cane
1. Hold the cane on the opposite side from the injured leg
The cane should be held on the side opposite the injured or weak leg, not on the same side. This allows it to support the opposite side of the body when the injured leg is on the ground.
2. Make sure the cane is the right height for you
With your arm hanging straight by your side, the cane should come up to the crease of your wrist. When you walk with the cane, there should be a slight bend of the elbow.
3. Swing the cane in coordination with the opposite leg
The cane should swing at about the speed and angle as the swinging leg. This should be a natural result of the normal arm swing when you walk. Bring the cane down in a relaxed manner as the heel of the swing leg comes down.
