How to Walk Correctly

Learn to walk more fluidly, more confidently, and with less impact on your joints

How to Walk Correctly

1. Start with Good Posture

Head elevated, floating up as if attached to a helium balloon

Shoulders back and down with a relaxed chest and upper back. The palms should face the sides of the thighs, not the front

Pelvis in a neutral position, not tilted forward or back. If you think of the pelvis as a bowl of water, water should not spill out of the front or back

Feet facing forward

2. Focus on Your Arm Swing

The way you swing your arms tells you a lot about the way you walk. Your arms should swing in opposition to your legs. The left arm should swing forward with your right leg. The right arm should swing forward with your left leg. The arms should not swing side to side. Try to be conscious of how your arms are swinging.

3. Foot Position is Very Important

The feet should face directly forward when you walk. They should not be turned out or in. Turning the feet out is a very common problem, especially in people who wear flip flops as regular footwear.

4. Control Your Foot Placement

The foot should place gently on the heel after the swing through, then roll forward as the weight is changed. Avoid pushing forward which will result in crashing into the heel.

5. Move from Your Core

Fluid walking is controlled by the movement of the core. This includes the rotation of the upper abdominal muscles, the lower abdominal muscles, and the hip joints. Coordinating these three core elements is critical for fluid walking technique.
